Olympic Trials Qualifier Doesn’t Let Diabetes Slow Her Down

I was thinking about what to write today in this little ole space of mine and then I read this amazing article online about a girl from Michigan.  Nicole Michmerhuizen, age 23, won the Indianapolis Marathon and qualified for the Olympic Trials with a time of…brace yourself...2 hours 41 minutes and 38 seconds.  And if thats isn’t amazing enough…she also has Type 1 diabetes.  Yea…pretty inspirational.  (Michigan girls are so cool…)  The article can be read here, but she goes on to say that she averages about 80 miles a week.  WOWSERS. I can’t imagine logging that many miles a week but then again 5 years ago I would have said running half marathons was crazy!  Good luck in February Nicole, I’ll be rooting for you and thanks for the inspiration, I needed it.

Final logoYou may be wondering why I needed it…well, it’s because I have signed up for my first marathon.  For years I have sworn that I would never run a full marathon, party due to not wanting to and partly due to my foot injury and my diabetes.  But recently I’ve started working with the JDRF UK events group and I’m volunteering to help them run their first soley run race – The South Downs Trail Challenge – June 4th, 2016 in Brighton, UK.    I figured I couldn’t help them with a race and not run the race myself so it’s official.  Since I don’t plan on repeating this distance (never say never though) I will be attempting to raise a lot of money for JDRF and soon will be posting my fundraising page for donations.   The race is going to be difficult due to it being along the coast, on a trail and has a couple of hills…just look at the elevation below.  I’m laughing because it’s so crazy…but I guess it’s perfect because I never tend to do anything small anyways.   I will need the next 6 months to get ready for this thing and so the training begins…

Once the new year begins, I’ll be documenting my journey here, once a week, the good, bad and ugly.  A good friend of mine has offered to coach me (yea) – I’m excited to work with him and very thankful for the help.  Until January, my goal is to keep running 3-4 times a week and continue with my Barre classes and spin classes twice a week while enjoying the holidays… I also have to keep an eye on my foot and make sure my diabetes is on track…so as you can see, I have some HUGE goals in 2016.
